What is chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia, and features
A
- mitochondrial disorder
- associated with Kearns sagre syndrome
Features
- progressive symmetrical loss of mobility
- usually upgaze is the first to be affected
- normal pupils and accommodation
- slowly progressive diplopia
- late stage has no eye movement due to fibrosis

- Fundoscopy
- ECG
- orthotic assessment
- ptosis props/fresnels

Ocular myositis - signs and symptoms
A
- inflammatory swelling of one or more EOMs
- pseudotumour
- Px presents with painful diplopia
Signs/symptoms
- acute pain
- proptosis
- diplopia
- oedema
- chemosis
- underlying inflammatory disease
- sinusitis or cellulitis

Diagnosis of ocular myositis
A
- acute onset but can be chronic
- CT scan shows inflammation
- ensur not rhabdomyosarcoma
