Blow Out Fracture Flashcards
1
Q
Signs of BOF
A
- endopthalmos due to increased orbital volume
- diplopia due to EOM entrapment
- orbital emphysema
- malar region numbness
- hypoglobus
- ON stretching/compression due to haemorrhage
2
Q
Inferior blowout fracture features
A
- most common
- orbital fat prolapses into maxillary sinus
- possible prolapse of inferior rectus muscle
- most fractures occur in floor
3
Q
Medial wall fracture features
A
- second most common
- occurs through lamina papyracea
- orbital fat and the medial rectus may prolapse into ethmoid air cells
4
Q
Superior blowout fracture features
A
- usually in Px with pneumatisation of orbital roof
- fractures only involve the sinus, anterior cranial fossa or both sinus and anterior cranial fossa
- fractures communicating with the anterior cranial fossa are at risk for CSF leak and meningitis
5
Q
Lateral blowout fracture features
A
- usually associated with orbital rim or other significant craniofacial injuries
6
Q
Other signs of blowout fractures
A
- optic nerve compression due to intraorbital haemorrhage
- EOM entrapment
- prolapse of orbital fat
7
Q
Indications for surgery
A
- significant exophthalmos
- muscle entrapment
- significant diplopia
- large area fracture
