What is continued professional development and why is it important?

A
  • Continued professional development is a commitment by RICS members to continually develop their skills and knowledge in order to remain professionally competent.
  • RICS members operate in a constantly changing environment relating to new legislation, guidance and technology. Therefore, CPD is important in ensuring all RICS members are competent and capable of reaching the standards required by the RICS.

  • Formal CPD is any structured learning which has clear learning objectives and outcomes.
  • Informal CPD is any self-managed learning that is relevant to the professional members role.

What are the CPD requirements for RICS members?

A
  • RICS members must have completed 20 hours of CPD each year by the 31 December, of which at least 50% must be formal CPD.
  • RICS members must completed CPD in relation to the RICS global professional and ethical standards at least once every three years.
  • RICS members must record their CPD for the preceding year by the 31 January.

The following training is classed as formal CPD provided each has clear learning objectives and outcomes:

  • Professional courses and seminars (such as CPD Foundation).
  • Structured in-house training seminars.
  • Computer based training.

The following training is classed as informal CPD:

  • Private study such as reading online guidance notes, journals or research papers.
  • Delivering or receiving work shadowing or on-the-job training.
  • In-house informal learning such as interactive discussions with internal experts.
