CPCR (Ngwenyama) Flashcards
What is CPA?
Cardiopulmonary arrest - sudden cessation of spontaneous respiration and heartbeat
What is the most common cause of CPA in small animals?
Due to systemic illness (affects multiple organ systems)
What are the types of cardiac arrest arrhythmia?
- Asystole (most common)
- Pulseless Electrical Activity (PEA)
- Pulseless ventricular tachycardia
- Ventricular fibrillation
What is the cause of asystole?
high vagal tone, or hyperkalemia
Ventricular tachycardia is more common with what kinds of diseases?
DCM…
What are the steps to CPCR according to RECOVER
Preparedness and Prevention Basic life support (ventilation, chest compressions) Advanced life support Monitory Post arrest care
Why don’t we want to go straight to a high dose Epinephrine with CPR
Too much will cause poor CO from too high of a heart rate
Which drug should you reach for first with advanced life support
it depends, but generally Atropine since most arrests are asystole and are caused by high vagal tone
When is the only time you need to use a defibrillator?
during ventricular fibrillation
biphasic better than monophasic
What should be monitored during CPRC?
ETCO2 to indicate perfusion and effectiveness of CPRC
There is no evidence to support routine use of which drugs?
corticosteroids
anti-seizure prophylaxis, mannitol, or metabolic protectants
What does the Impedance Threshold Device (ITD) do?
Lowers intrathoracic pressures during chest decompression phase of CPR which may increase venous return to heart
What is the prognosis for anesthesia-related arrests?
47%
Overall CPR survival rate?
4-9.6%
