CP – The behaviour of salty water Flashcards

1
Q

What is the process of solar salt extraction?

A
  1. Water with a 3.5% salt conc. Sunlight/heat maks the water evaporate
  2. Precipitate of Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) is formed.
  3. More evaporation = precipitation of Calcium sulphate (CaSO4)
  4. More evaporation = precipitation of Sodium Chloride (NaCl)
  5. Collect sodium chloride (table salt) for sale

Q

What will happen if the concentration of a solution is increased by removing water?

A

Solution will become saturated.

Keep on removing water = solution becomes super saturated and precipitation will occur

Q

What happens when temperature is increased for solutes like salt or sugar?

A

An increase in temperature means that the solution will hold more before becoming saturated

16
Q

What is true of concentration at a constant temperature?

A

Concentration at equilibrium is fixed at a constant temperature

17
Q

How many constituents of salt are there in the sea?

A

11

18
Q

What is a salvation shell?

A

Ions get a salvation shell with the relevant charged end of the water molecules (dipole) closest to the ions
