Define ENDEMIC
Refers to the constant presence and/or usual prevalence of a disease or infectious agent in a population within a geographic area
I.E. malaria
Define OUTBREAK
Same definition as epidemic but is often used for a more limited geographic area
I.E. Cholera
Define EPIDEMIC
Refers to an increase, often sudden, in the number of cases of a disease above what is normally expected in that population in that area
Define PANDEMIC
Refers to an epidemic that has spread over several countries or continents, usually affecting a large number of people
I.E. COVID
What are the 3 different types of variants
VARIANT OF INTEREST
- genetic traits which predict
- greater transmissibility
- more sever disease
- evasion of immune system or testing
VARIANT OF CONCERN
observed to :
- have increased transmissibility
- cause more serious infection
- cause reinfection or infection in immunised
VARIANT OF HIGH CONSEQUENCE
- No protection from vaccines
