Covalet Netwrok Solids Flashcards
Type of particle
Atoms
3D lattice structure, sometimes 2D lattice.
Attractive force
Covalent bonds
Very strong covalent bonds.
Melting point
Extremely high, required to break those covalent bonds.
Are covalent network solids hard?
Yes, extremely hard and brittle as the atoms are held in a 3D network by strong covalent bonding.
Are covalent networks solids soluble in solvents?
No, the covalent bonds are not broken by the attraction of solvent molecules.
Do covalent molecules conduct electricity?
No, no charged particles (electrons or ions) free to move in the structure.
Graphite can as each C id bonded to only 3 their carbons there is one free valence electron for each C atom. These electrons are free to move within the structureand can conduct electricity.
