Covalent Substances😬 Flashcards
Substances with covalent bonds can be what?
Either simple molecules or a giant structure.
What do the atoms in a simple molecular substance form?
Very strong covalent bonds to form small molecules of several atoms.
The forces of attraction between the molecules are what?
Very weak.
What is the result of these weak forces?
Melting and boiling points are very low because the molecules are easily parted from each other.
Do molecular substances conduct electricity?
No, there are no ions so there’s no electrical charge.
What are giant covalent structures?
Macromolecules.
All the atoms in a giant covalent structure are bonded how?
By strong covalent bonds.
What does the strong covalent bonds in these giant covalent structures mean?
They have very high melting and boiling points.
What are the main examples of giant covalent structures?
Diamond and Graphite.
In diamond, each carbon atom forms how many covalent bonds?
It forms 4 in a very rigid giant covalent structure.
In graphite, each carbon atom forms how man covalent bonds?
It forms 3, and this creates layers which are free to slide over each other.
What is there between the layers of graphite?
Weak intermolecular forces.
