Covalent Bonds Flashcards
What is covalent bonding?
When non-metal atoms bond together, they share pairs of electrons.
Explain the properties of simple molecular substances.
Low melting / boiling point
Usually a gas / liquid at room temperature
Due to weak intermolecular forces.
Do not conduct electricity
Because the molecules do not have an overall electric charge.
Describe and explain the structure of polymers.
Polymers have very large molecules.
The atoms in the polymer molecules are linked to other atoms by strong covalent bonds.
The intermolecular forces between polymer molecules are relatively strong.
So, these substances are solids at room temperature.
Describe and explain the structure and properties of giant covalent structures.
All of the atoms in giant covalent structures are linked to other atoms by strong covalent bonds.
They have very high melting / boiling points
Because a lot of energy is required to overcome the strong covalent bonds.
