Covalent Bonds Flashcards
True or False?
Covalent bonding happens to two non-metals.

True or False?
NaCl or sodium chloride is an example of a covalent bond.
False
True or False?
Covalent and ionic bonds are similar in melting point, hardness, and electrical conductivity.
False
Molecules composed of only two atoms, of the same or different chemical elements.
Diatomic Molecules
It is the tendency of atoms to prefer to have eight electrons in the valence shell.
Octet Rule
It gives us the general shape of the molecules.
Molecular Geometry
This shape is produced when two groups try to get as far away from each other as they can.
Linear
This shape is formed when three pairs get as far apart from each other as possible. The angle formed by any two bonds in the molecule is 120°.
Trigonal Planar
This structure is a common one. Many nonmetals and ions have this structure. One of which is methane (CH4). Its bond angle is 109.5°
Tetrahedron
When there are five electron pairs. One good example of this is the Phosphorus pentachloride (PCl5) molecule.
Trigonal Bipyramid
Unlike tetrahedron whose bonds are equidistant, the distance of trigonal bipyramid bonds is not equal.
Six bonding pairs are present in which all the positions are equivalent, all the bond distances are equal, and all the angles formed by any adjacent bonds are 90°
Octahedron
