Covalent bonding, structures and properties of simple covalent molecules Flashcards
what are convalent bonds?
shared pairs of electrons
what is a double covalent bond
two pairs of electrons that are shared between the same atoms
what is a triple convalent bond
three pairs of electrons that are shared between the same atoms
when do convalent bonds form
when non-metal atom share their outer electrons in order to complete their outer shell and become more stable
what are the properties of simple convalent substances
low melting and biling points, variable solublity in water, poor conductors of electricity
why do simple covalent bonds have high melting and boiling points
The bond between them is strong but they are attracted by very weak intermolecular forces which can be overcome by small amounts of heat energy
why are simple covalent substances poor conductors of electricity
they do not have free electrons to move the electricity
what is the solubility in water of simple covalent substances
it varies between substances
