Covalent Bonding GCSE SPECIFICS Flashcards
What is Covalent Bonding?
Sharing of 2 electrons between two non metal atoms
Electrostatic force of attraction between shared pair of nuclei and negatively charged electrons
2 Main groups of Covalent structures?
Simple Molecular
Giant Covalent
Examples of Simple Moelcular?
Co2, H20
Examples of Giant Covalent?
Graphite, Diamond, Fullerene
Do Simple Molecular structures have a high or low melting and boiling point?
Low melting and Boiling point as a small amount of energy is required to overcome these weak intermolecular bonds between adjacent compounds
Do simple Molecular Structures conduct electricity?
In general, Simple Molecular Structures do not conduct electricity
What are Fullerene, Graphite and Diamond all made from?
Carbon atoms only
what is the structure of Diamond?
Each c atom forms a covalent bond with 4 other carbon atoms. This generates a giant covalent network
Properties of Diamond?
Tough
High Melting Boiling Point
These are both because the Carbon bondsare very strong
Does not conduct electricity
