Covalent bonding and molecules Flashcards
What is covalent bonding ?
a chemical bond formed when two atoms share electrons, typically non-metal atoms, to achieve a stable electron configuration, like a noble gas.
What is the symbol for Hydroxide, Sulfate, Nitrate and Carbonate ?
OH-, SO4-, NO3-, CO3-
What type of attraction would this type of bond have ?
Electrostatic Attraction.
What are the two ways to solve and work out this type of bond ?
Dot and Cross diagrams
Writing the symbols
What are molecules ?
There are groups mixed atoms covalently bonded together.
What is the structure of the bond for methane ?
H H
C
H H
Do covalent molecules have different or the same low melting and boiling points ?
Can they be gases liquids solids or all of them ?
Different
All of them
The melting and boiling points of the molecules where would they be?
strong and weak
Strong - Inside the molecule
Weak - between and depend on the melt and boil point when they break.
Strong inter…- Inside the molecules remains unchanged
Weak inter…- between the molecules
Can molecules conduct electricity if so why?
No, this is because there are no free electrons or ions to carry a charge.
