Covalent Bonding Flashcards
What does a covalent bond happen between
Between nonmetals
What is a covalent bond
The electrostatic force of attraction between shared pairs of electrons and nuclei of both atoms
What is the process of a covalent bond?
Sharing of electrons
What are three possible structures of a covalent bond?
Simple Covalent (molecular) Fullerene. Diamond. Graphite
What are the properties of Fullerene?
Soft: Material is held together by intermolecular forces, so they can slide over each other
Conducts electricity poorly ( Each carbon atom only has 3 bonds therefore there is one free/delocalised electron which cannot move between the molecules
What are the properties of Diamond?
High Melting and Boiling Point (Strong covalent bonds require a large amount of heat energy to break)
Hard: Strong Covalent bonds require lots of energy to be broken
What are the properties of Graphite?
Conducts Electricity: (Each carbon atom only has 3 bonds so there is a free/ delocalised electron that can move between the molecules
High Melting and Boiling Point
Lubricant: Layers of Carbon atoms can slide over each other easily
