Chemical tests: Anions (Negative Ions) Flashcards
What is the test for Halides (Group 7 ions)
Add dilute Nitric Acid (HNO3), followed by silver nitrate solution (AgNO3), and observe precipitate
What does a chloride ion produce
White precipitate (Silver Chloride)
What does a bromide ion produce
Cream precipitate (Silver bromide)
What does an iodide ion produce
Yellow precipitate (Silver iodide)
Why is the dilute Nitric acid added
To remove carbonate or sulfate ions before the test
What is the test for Sulfates?
Add dilute HCl, followed by barium chloride solution BaCl2. If a white precipitate is produced then it shows Sulfate ions are present
What is the test for Carbonates? CO3 2-
Add dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl). If Carbonates are present then carbon dioxide will be released
