Covalent Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What is a covalent bond (2)
A
A covalent bond is a shared pair of electrons
2
Q
Why don’t molecular substances conduct electricity?
A
Because there are no delocalised electrons (charged particles)
3
Q
why do molecular substances have low melting and boiling points?
A
Because there are weak intermolecular forces. You don’t have to break the covalent bonds to boil or melt the molecular substances.
4
Q
why do longer chain hydrocarbons have higher boiling points?
A
More energy is needed to separate them
