Covalent bonding Flashcards
What is another way elements bond apart from ionic bonding?
Covalent bonding.
What is covalent bonding?
Where atoms share electrons in their outer shells (highest energy level).
What does both atoms bonding covalently mean?
That they feel as though they have a full outer shell, which gives them the electronic structure of a noble gas.
What does each covalent bond provide?
Extra shared electrons for each atom.
What is a covalent bond?
A shared pair of electrons.
What does each atom involved in covalent bonding have to do?
Make enough covalent bonds to fill up its outer shell.
What examples of covalent bonding do we need to know?
- Hydrogen.
- Chlorine.
- Methane.
- Hydrogen Chloride.
- Ammonia.
- Water.
- Oxygen.
What is the formula for hydrogen?
H2.
What is the formula for chlorine?
Cl2.
What is the formula for methane?
CH4.
What is the formula for hydrogen chloride?
HCl.
What is the formula for ammonia?
NH3.
What is the formula for water?
H2O.
What is the formula for oxygen?
O2.
How do you draw a covalent bond?
- By drawing overlapping circles of the atoms.
- Then drawing their electrons on the circles.
- Then drawing the shared electrons in between the overlap, so that each atom has a full outer shell.
