Q

Do giant covalent bonds conduct electricity?

A

Nah m8, not even when they’re molten; there’s no charged ions.
GRAPHITE IS AN EXCEPTION THO, REMEMBER GRAPHITE CONDUCTS ELECTRICITY WHEN MOLTEN.

Q

Describe the features of a diamond. What’s it commonly used for?

A

Each carbon atom forms 4 covalent bonds in a giant covalent structure.
Hardest natural substance on Earth!
It’s used in drill tips.

Q

Describe the features of silicon dioxide.

A

Sand is made of silicon dioxide.

Each grain of sand is one giant covalent structure of silicon and oxygen.

Q

Describe the features of graphite. What’s it used for?

A

Each carbon atom forms 3 covalent bonds, this creates LAYERS. Graphite is like ogres, IT HAS LAYERS.
These layers slide over each other, making graphite soft and slippery.
These layers rub off when you use a pencil!
The intermolecular forces between the molecules in graphite are WEAK, that’s why they rub off so easily.

Q

Why does graphite conduct electricity?

A

Each carbon atom has a free electron, so these electrons can conduct heat and electricity.

15
Q

Describe a simple molecular substance

A

It’s a type of covalent structure. It has very strong covalent bonds between several atoms to make very small molecules.
Despite having strong covalent bonds, they have very weak intermolecular forces, so their melting points and boiling points are weak.

17
Q

Do simple molecular substances conduct electricity?

A

Nope, there aren’t any charged ions to conduct charge.
