Acids & Alkalis Flashcards
The pH scale goes from _ to __.
0 to 14.
The strongest acid has pH _, and the strongest alkali has pH __.
Strongest acid = pH 0
Strongest alkali = pH 14
A neutral substance has a pH of _.
7 = water
What’s an indicator?
An indicator is a dye that changes colour depending on whether the solution/substance it’s been added to is above or below a certain pH.
What’s universal indicator?
Universal indicator contains an array of dyes which form the rainbow pH scale depending on the pH of the solution/substance that it’s been added to.
Acids & Alkali do what to each other?
Neutralise each other.
Why/how do acids and alkalis neutralise each other?
Acids contain H+ ions and alkalis contain OH- ions, these ions neutralise each other, because of their opposite charges, to form the neutral solution of water.
Which ions are present in acids?
H+ ions. Hydrogen.
Which ions are present in alkalis?
OH- ions. Hydroxide.
What’s an alkali?
An alkali is a base that dissolves in water.
What’s a base?
A base is a substance with a pH greater than 7.
What’s an acid?
An acid is a substance with a pH lower than 7.
Equation for neutralisation?
H+(aq) + OH-(aq) = H20(l)
What do state symbols tell you?
What physical state reactants & products are in.
What does (aq) mean?
Aqueous, this means dissolved in water.
