Covalent Bonding Flashcards
What is the definition of an ionic bond?
The ionic bond is the electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ions
Define covalent bond
The electrostatic force of attraction between a shared pair of electrons and the two adjacent nuclei
Molecules
Always covalent
Any metals involved
Ionic
Types of covalent bonds
Single
Double
Trip,e
Ionic compounds structure
They have a giant structure with a lattice pattern. Made up of negative and positive charges but have no overall charge. There are strong bonds ( EFOA) between the ions and a lot of them which means a lot of energy is needed to overcome these bonds. This is why they have a high melting point
Covalent bonds
Are also strong however the intermolecular forces between the the molecules is weak. This is why they have boiling points
