Covalent Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
What is a covalent bond?
A
-A bond that is formed between non-metal atoms
-At least one pair of electrons from the outer shell are shared
-One pair is called a covalent bond
2
Q
What is a co-ordinate bond?
A
-A co-ordinate bond is when one atom supplies both electrons
-The supplying atom typically has a pair of electrons not being used in a bond. This is referred to as a lone pair.
-This can also be called ‘dative covalent bonding’
3
Q
What are the properties of covalently bonded molecules?
A
-Low melting temperatures (Strong covalent bonds, but weak intermolecular forces)
-Poor conductors of electricity (Molecules are neutral overall)
