To determine whether someone is innocent or guilty

Most civil and some minor criminal cases like traffic violations, vandalism, and shoplifting.

Serious criminal offences like rape, armed robbery, and fraud

The most serious criminal cases like murder, manslaughter, and major drug trafficking.

What is an appeal?
An appeal is challenging a decision made by a court.
What types of cases does the High Court of Australia deal with?
Constitutional matters and appeals from family and federal courts. An example of a constitutional matter was the Commonwealth Vs Tasmania which was about preventing Tasmania from building of a hydroelectric dam to preserve the environment.
What types of cases does the children’s court deal with.
Criminal matters involving children like alleged child abuse, theft by a child, and child neglect.
