Courage Flashcards
“Was the bravest man who ever lived”.
Scout talking about Atticus.
“Atticus wasn’t interested in guns” “Atticus Finch was the deadest shot in Maycomb county”.
-Atticus remains silent about his achievements.
-He believes that real courage is when “you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway” and not that courage is man with a gun.
“when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.”
-Atticus to Jem.
-Refers to Mrs Dubose’s commitment to beating her morphine addiction before death.
-She knows that she will die but still does it.
-Also reinforced when Atticus defends TR knowing he cannot win and that the jury will find Tom guilty no latter what.
“That jury took a few hours.”
-Atticus to Jem about how long the Jury deliberated before returning with a verdict.
-Sees a glimmer of hope in the fact that the jury did not find TR guilt immediately.
-AT least one member might have believed TR’s innocence showing courage as they spoke out.
“I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again.”
-Atticus to Scout.
-If he lacked the courage to defend TR in his trial he would not be a good lawyer of a good father.
-he is courageous in defending Tom and wants Tim and Scout to understand how important it is to do the right thing.
-He knows he and his children will be scrutinised for it but does it regardless, showing courage.
“She was the bravest person I ever knew.”
-Atticus to Scout about Mrs Dubose.
-She died morphine free despite knowing she would die soon.
