Couplings Flashcards
What do couplings do?
Joins 2 shafts together turning in the same direction on the same centerline
The 3 major types of shaft couplings are?
Fixed, flexible, u-joint
A type of coupling where 2 shafts are perfectly aligned; the simplest type of power transmission.
Rigid couplings
A rigid coupler that can connect shafts of the same or different diameters; held together by bolted on flanges.
Flange couplers
A one piece rigid coupler, held by keyways and screws. Medium to low load capacity
Sleeved
A rigid coupler with the highest load capacity; 2 halves joined together clamped onto a shaft by clamping together the 2 sides.
Ribbed coupling
2 types of misalignment
Angular and parallel
3 types of rigid couplings
Flange, ribbed, sleeve
5 types of no lube couplers
Sleeve, flange, ribbed, tire coupling, pin and block, jaw
A coupling that needs a telescoping shaft to stay in alignment
U-joint
Functions of flexible couplings
Dampen vibration
protect from overload
measure input and output speed
Insulate from heat and electricity
Axial mis alignment is known as
End float/ end play
Backlash does what
Allows for:
misalignment
places for lube
Thermal expansion
The insert in a jaw coupling is called
Spider
3 types of chain couplers
Double chain, silent chain, plastic chain
