Sees they have differences, defining oneself (differentiation*), managing conflict, greater separation, loss of romance.
To survive the stage, indvs must acknowledge differences, learn to share power, forfeit fantasies of harmony and accept partners.

Autonomy and Individuality
Characterized by redirection of personal attention, time, activities away from partners & oneself.
Acceptance of differences
intimacy does not sacrifice separateness
Stage 3: Stability
Commitment stage
marriage is ideal
Partners acknowledge they want to be with each other and the good outweighs the bad.
Stage 4: Commitment
Constancy
The foundation of the relationship is no longer personal need, but the appreciation and love of the other and the support and respect for mutual personal growth
Stage 5: Co-creation
This stage aims to make a contribution beyond the relationship itself.
