Counterstrain Flashcards
Find all Cervical Counterstrain Points. What are their mnemonics?
PC1 Inion. inferior to nuchal line, lateral to inion –> F St Ra
PC1 Occiput –> on the inferior nuchal line closest to the mastoid process but a bit lateral–> E SaRa
PC2 Occiput –> between both PC1 inion and occiput –> E SaRa
PC2 –> superior/superior lateral aspect of spinous process of C2 –> E SaRa
PC3 –> on the inferior tip/inferolateral aspect of spinous process of C2 –> F SARA
PC4-8 –> inferior or inferolateral aspect of spinous process. –> E SaRa
Find all Lumbar Counterstrain Points and what are their setups?
PL1-5 Spinous Process –> inferolateral aspect of the spinous process –> E, Adduct, RT the leg away
PL1-3 TP –> E SaRt
UPL5 (superior medial surface of the PSIS) –> E, Adduct, IR/ER
LPL5 –> inferior to PSIS –> F off the table, IR, Adduct
HISI –> 2-3cm lateral to PSIS –> E, Abduct, ER
PL3 –> 3/4 lateral from PSIS to TFL –> E, Ab, ER
PL4 –> posterior margin of the TFL –> E, Ab, ER
Find all Thoracic Spinous Process Counterstrain points and what are their setups?
PT1-3 SP (inferior aspect of the spinous process) –> (EXTEND) prone, arms over sides, extend patient up on table to monitor.
PT4-6 SP –> E
PT7-12 –> can use knee to extend them up. E
Find all Thoracic Transverse Process Counterstrain points and what are their setups
PT1-3TP –> E SaRa, pt supine, head off table
PT4-9TP –> E SaRT –> stand opposite tender point, lift their tender point shoulder posterior and cephalad
PT10-12 –> grab asis opposite tender point and pull up. E SaRa of the pelvis, Rt torso,.
What is the steps of Counterstrain?
Find significant tenderpoint
establish a tenderness scale
monitor tender point throughout
place patient in position of ease (reduce pain by 70%)
hold 90 seconds
slowly and passively return to neutral
recheck tenderness
