Counterpoint Flashcards
Fugal Subject
Theme introduced at the beginning of a fugue, which becomes the main component of exposition throughout the composition
Real answer
An exact copy of the subject at the level of the dominant. Contains identical intervals to the first statement
Tonal Answer
Tonally adjusted answer of the subject at the level of the dominant (key doesn’t change, scale degree pattern of subject is shifted 5th higher)
Countersubject
Accompaniment to the subject that returns to accompany each time the subject or its answer returns
Fugal exposition
First section of a fugue where all voices have entered (subject and answer)
Episode
Material from subject is developed by all the voices in freely contrapuntal texture until restatement
Stretto
Melodic material enters in one voice, then in another before the first voice is done w/statement of material. Creates overlap, almost like a canon, and provides greater intensity
Retrograde
A “back-to-front” iteration of the subject within an episode of the fugue
