Question 1

Opthalamic drops

Answer 1

1. Wash hands
2. remove glasses/contact lenses
3. remove the cap without touching the dropper tip
4. tilt head back or lie down; pull lower eyelid down forming a pocket
5. hold dropper directly over eye (be sure the dropper does not touch the eye/eyelid)
6. look up and away from the dropper and place one drop in the pocket
7. hold eyelid for a moment so drop is allowed to spread, then close your eye. apply light pressure to nasolacrimal opening on side of nose to avoid systemic absorption or loss of product (30 secs)
8. wipe any excess liquid from face
9. wait 5 minutes to add more drops
10. wash hands

Question 2

Opthalmic ointment

Answer 2

1. wash hands
2. remove glasses/contact lenses
3. remove cap without touching the tube tip
4. tilt head back/lie down and pull down lower eyelid
5. hold tube tip directly over eye without the tube touching the eye or eyelid
6. look up and away from the tip and squeeze tip until about 1/4-1/2 inch of ointment is placed in the eyelid pocket
7. gently close eyelid and allow eyeball to move so ointment can spread for 1/2 minutes
8. wipe excess from face
9. wash hands

Opthalmic wash

Answer 3

Without a cup—-> use as eyedrops
With a cup—->
1. rinse cup before and after use
2. full cup halfway with wash
3. carefully place on eye tightly
4. tilt head back and open eyelids and rotate eyeball to wash
5. get rid of used wash

Question 4

Nasal Spray

Answer 4

1. blow your nose before using the spray
2. wash hands with soap and water
3. remove cap from container
4. tilt head slightly forward and and press finger against one side of the nose to close one nostril
5. insert bottle tip into one nostril; support bottom of spray with thumb and press down on the applicator with two fingers
6. breathe in quickly while squeezing the bottle
7. repeat in other nostril if needed
8. wash hands

Question 5

Otic Drops

Answer 5

1. wash hands
2. clean outside of ear with a damp cloth, careful not to get water in ear
3. warm ear drops by holding container in hands for a few minutes
4. tilt head to side or lie down with affected ear facing up
5. pull ear upwards (if an adult) or backward and downward (if a child)
6. drop appropriate amount of drops into the ear avoiding touching the bottle tip to the ear
7. keep ear tilted for 3-5 minutes
8. wipe excess away
9. if instilling in both ears, wait 5-10 before moving onto other ear
10. wash hands
