Q

What are some methods to overcome resistance in a counseling?

A
  1. Reconfirm the specifics of the purpose of the counseling session, but refrain from personal attacks on subordinate.
  2. Keep discussion professional and balanced in tone - no arguing or placing blame.
  3. Discuss suspected resistance openly and respect the subordinates response.
  4. Slow the tempo of the session by relying on open-ended questions in order to give the subordinate the opportunity to reveal information and be an active participant in their counseling session.
  5. Focus on one specific behavior, its effect, and the consequences to minimize overwhelming the subordinate. May need to have multiple sessions to address each adequately, but prioritize based on needs of the individual and unit.
