Humblest place to be on a slope is at the bottom: most village wines come from the bottom-slope or flatlands. Soil is heaviest here, least well-drained, has the most clay.
2nd best place to be on the slope is the top 3rd, more limestone in the soil, but sunnier. Many Premier cru vineyards are on the top 3rd.
Best place to be is mid-slope, where Grand crus are located. Limestone and marl are abundant, enough sun. The mid slope is called the thermal belt.
