Q

What is the difference between Encepagement and Assemblage?

A

Encépagement refers to grape varieties in the vineyard, while assemblage refers to the composition of the final wine. Often prescribed percentages for varieties in vineyard and winery align exactly; however, there are many instances in which they do not.

Q

What is the difference between a climat and a lieu-dit

A

It appears that over time, climat and lieu-dit have been used pretty much interchangeably, which means an amount of confusion is being created as the region now attempts to extricate one from the other. This is proving rather tricky, especially as one climat can contain several lieux-dits, for example within the grand cru Clos de Vougeot. Equally, and paradoxically, we are told, a climat may cover just part of one lieu-dit.

Climat, French, particularly Burgundian, term for a specific vineyard site defined by, as the name suggests, all of its climatological as well as geographical characteristics, otherwise known as terroir. Thus the Burgundian grower uses the word climat interchangeably with ‘vineyard’. A climat is generally but not always smaller than a specific appellation. The term climat may for example be used to refer to a grand cru such as Richebourg. To further complicate matters, most appellations have over the centuries been subdivided into small parcels, each with its own traditional name, known by local geographers as a lieu-dit.

"Vergelesses" stems from the Middle French verge, meaning "rod," a reference to the parcel's long shape.)

Q

What do the producers in Pernand-Vergelesses label their white wines from Corton?

Q

What is unique about the majority of climats in Aloxe-Corton and Ladoix communes?

A

Corton’s AOP regulations legally define these climats as geographic designations for red wines. 24 of 26 total climats may appear on a Corton rouge label. On the hill’s western mid-slope, where the soils turn white, the remaining two—Le Charlemagne in Aloxe-Corton and En Charlemagne in Pernand-Vergelesses—form the core of Corton-Charlemagne AOP. In all three communes, vineyards along the uppermost, steepest slopes are also entitled to this appellation, and are usually planted to Chardonnay. In total, 72 of Corton’s 160 ha fall within Corton-Charlemagne.

Q

Why does En Charlemagne produces mostly Corton-Charlemagne blanc rather than Corton rouge?

A

The 17.5-ha En Charlemagne produces mostly Corton-Charlemagne blanc as the western exposure brings reduced sunlight and heat during the day. Corton-Charlemagne wines from the En Charlemagne climat likewise tend to be a bit more austere and acid-driven than those hailing from the more southerly slopes of Le Charlemagne, across the Aloxe-Corton border.

A

The Côte de Beaune AOP, not to be confused with the Côte de Beaune-Villages AOP, is a small appellation covering a smattering of vineyards located above the northern sector of premiers crus, at an elevation of 300-370 meters producing light red and white wines.

-ATVB, Burgundy’s clonal research facility, owns the largest parcel in the area, a 20-hectare experimental vineyard.

Q

What creates the denser, gutsier, more tannic style of Pinot in Pommard in comparison to Volnay? How does this affect elevage?

A

The commune is bifurcated (def: divided into two branches or forks) by the Dheune stream. The water flow and erosion have deposited a greater percentage of iron-rich clay on pommard’s lower slopes, resulting in fuller-bodied, weightier, sturdier wines.

-Consequently, Pommard may see more new oak than other red wines.

54
Q

What commune produces a higher quantity of white wines than any other commune in the Côte d’Or?

A

Meursault

55
Q

What makes Meursault’s classically oxidative and wood-framed style?

A

Meursault has a lower water table than either Puligny or Chassagne, resulting in greater underground cellar space, a fact many sources credit for Meursault’s classically oxidative wood-framed style.

-However, a number of top producers today prefer a more reductive, steelier approach.

55
Q

57
Q

58
Q

What is the most important climat in Meursault?

63
Q

What is Blagny’s white and red wines labeled as?

A

white grapes are labeled under those better-regarded, better-known appellations of Puligny or Meursault based on the divide.

Red grapes are released under the rare Blagny AOP (one of four red wine only appellations in Beaune)

64

Q

—Batard Montrachet

80
Q

Who owns the largest parcel of Montrachet? Who produces the wine?

A

Bouchard Père and Fils with 2.5 of 7.3 hectares.

82
Q

What is the Montrachet Grand Cru known as on the Chassagne side?

A

Le Montrachet

83
Q

What soils characterize Chassagne-Montrachet?

A

Red clay soils characterize many of the village vineyards and the lower slopes of the premiers crus.

-much of Chassagne-Montrachet is actually better suited to Pinot Noir than Chardonnay.

84
Q

When did the trend of red wine dominated Chassagne Montrachet change?

A

This trend reversed course after World War II, and today two-thirds of the village’s 300 ha of vines are planted with Chardonnay.

85
Q

Descbribe the wines of Chassagne-Montrachet

A

In the premiers crus, limestone-derived soils become thinner and stonier and the white wines excel. In style, the whites are broader and more thickly textured than Puligny—generally a result of heavier new oak usage—but more difficult to distinguish in broad strokes from Meursault. The reds are generally lighter in body and they can be tannic.

86
Q

What is the only grand cru Chassagne claims in its entirety? How big is it?

A

At 1.6 ha Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet it is the smallest white wine-producing grand cru in Burgundy.

87
Q

How many premier crus are in Chassagne?

A

55 official premiers crus encompassing 150 hectares.

  • Many are never seen on labels, and smaller climats are often sold under the names of larger, more recognizable vineyards. For instance
