What is a combe?
A short valley or hollow on a hillside or coastline
What is the difference between Encepagement and Assemblage?
Encépagement refers to grape varieties in the vineyard, while assemblage refers to the composition of the final wine. Often prescribed percentages for varieties in vineyard and winery align exactly; however, there are many instances in which they do not.
What is the difference between a climat and a lieu-dit
It appears that over time, climat and lieu-dit have been used pretty much interchangeably, which means an amount of confusion is being created as the region now attempts to extricate one from the other. This is proving rather tricky, especially as one climat can contain several lieux-dits, for example within the grand cru Clos de Vougeot. Equally, and paradoxically, we are told, a climat may cover just part of one lieu-dit.
Climat, French, particularly Burgundian, term for a specific vineyard site defined by, as the name suggests, all of its climatological as well as geographical characteristics, otherwise known as terroir. Thus the Burgundian grower uses the word climat interchangeably with ‘vineyard’. A climat is generally but not always smaller than a specific appellation. The term climat may for example be used to refer to a grand cru such as Richebourg. To further complicate matters, most appellations have over the centuries been subdivided into small parcels, each with its own traditional name, known by local geographers as a lieu-dit.

What is the largest single grand cru appellation in all of Burgundy? What styles are produced?

What grand cru rouge is usually the least expensive in any négociant’s portfolio?
Corton

Name the most famous producer in Pernand Vergelesses.
—Clos Berthet “bur-tay” —Creux de la Net “crow-de-la-net” —En Caradeux “CARE-ron-due” —Ile “eel” des Vergelesses-(origin "Ile" indicates "best", in this case, the vineyard has a highly favorabvle exposure sources suggests that the vineyard itself is an island ("ile") of sorts, bordered on all sides by path roads. "Vergelesses" stems from the Middle French verge, meaning "rod," a reference to the parcel's long shape.) —Les Fichots —Sous Fretille “FREH-tea-yay” —Vergelesses —Village de Pernand
—The most famous producer based in Pernand-Vergelesses is Bonneau du Martray (the only domaine in Burgundy to sell only grand cru wine.)
What do the producers in Pernand-Vergelesses label their white wines from Corton?
Although both red and white wines are produced under this AOP, producers in the Pernand-Vergelesses sector only produce Corton rouge, labeling white wines Corton-Charlemagne instead.
What is unique about the majority of climats in Aloxe-Corton and Ladoix communes?
Corton’s AOP regulations legally define these climats as geographic designations for red wines. 24 of 26 total climats may appear on a Corton rouge label. On the hill’s western mid-slope, where the soils turn white, the remaining two—Le Charlemagne in Aloxe-Corton and En Charlemagne in Pernand-Vergelesses—form the core of Corton-Charlemagne AOP. In all three communes, vineyards along the uppermost, steepest slopes are also entitled to this appellation, and are usually planted to Chardonnay. In total, 72 of Corton’s 160 ha fall within Corton-Charlemagne.
Name the three communes that encircle the southern half of the hill of Corton, and each containing some slice of the grand cru pie.
Which is the biggest shareholder?
Ladoix-Serrigny, Aloxe-Corton, and Pernand-Vergelesses
Aloxe-Corton (as its name might indicate) is the biggest shareholder, with 75% of the entire appellation-120 hectares-falling inside its borders.
What climat in Aloxe-Corton has long been the pride of the appellation? Name two neighbors that are also highly regarded.
Le Clos du Roi, 10.75 ha.
Neighboring Les Bressandes and Les Renardes are also highly regarded.

Lower slopes: clay
What 2-hectare monopole is located within the climate of Le Rognet et Corton?
Domaine Faiveley’s Clos des Cortons Faiveley.
What lieu-dit dominates the grand crus of the Ladoix commune?
Le Rognet et Corton, where the hillside’s aspect faces due east.
Origin of name: Rogner means “to cut”, perhaps signifying that a small path seperates this vineyard from Corton.
How many hectares are in the commune of Ladoix-Serrigny?
Fewer than 100 ha of vines.
-Unlike other double-barreled commune names in Burgundy, Serrigny does not indicate a vineyard. Ladoix and Serrigny are two neighboring hamlets that banded together to form the commune.
Pernand-Vergelesses AOP
What are the five premier crus located within the commune of Ladoix-Serrigny and what AOP are the labeled under?
La Coutière La Maréchaude La Toppe au Vert Les Moutottes Les Petites Lolières
all labeled Aloxe-Corton
Why does En Charlemagne produces mostly Corton-Charlemagne blanc rather than Corton rouge?
The 17.5-ha En Charlemagne produces mostly Corton-Charlemagne blanc as the western exposure brings reduced sunlight and heat during the day. Corton-Charlemagne wines from the En Charlemagne climat likewise tend to be a bit more austere and acid-driven than those hailing from the more southerly slopes of Le Charlemagne, across the Aloxe-Corton border.
Name three premier cru that only produce white wine in Pernand Vergelesses.
Which is a monopole and who is the owner?
Clos Berthet “Bear-thay” (monopole owned by Dubreuil-Fontaine “DOO-broy)
Sous Frétille “Freh-tee-a”
Village de Pernand
Those sites that are on the Frétille hill sector may by law only produce white wine. The best Pernand white wines are even tighter, fresher, and flintier than those produced in neighboring Corton-Charlemagne.
What two climats make up the core of Corton-Charlemagne AOP?
Le Charlemagne in Aloxe-Corton and En Charlemagne in Pernand-Vergelesses, both on the hill’s western mid-slope, where the soils turn white.
Why does the 17.5-ha En Charlemagne produce mostly Corton-Charlemagne blanc rather than Corton rouge? What are the wines like?

The Côte de Beaune AOP, not to be confused with the Côte de Beaune-Villages AOP, is a small appellation covering a smattering of vineyards located above the northern sector of premiers crus, at an elevation of 300-370 meters producing light red and white wines.

What are the four appellations in the Côte de Beaune that may only produce red wine?
Volnay
Pommard
Blagny
Côte de Beaune-Villages
What creates the denser, gutsier, more tannic style of Pinot in Pommard in comparison to Volnay? How does this affect elevage?
The commune is bifurcated (def: divided into two branches or forks) by the Dheune stream. The water flow and erosion have deposited a greater percentage of iron-rich clay on pommard’s lower slopes, resulting in fuller-bodied, weightier, sturdier wines.
-Consequently, Pommard may see more new oak than other red wines.
Top domaines are based in Pommard.
Comte Armand
Domain de Courcel
Name three exemplary premier crus in Pommard.
- Les Grands Epenots
- Les Petits Epenots
- Clos des Epeneaux (Comte Armand Monopole) divided between Les Grands Epenots and Les Petits Epenots
-Les Rugiens Bas (likely Pommards’s most exceptional vineyard); In 2011 Pommard’s vignerons filed a petition with the INAO to elevate the entire Les Rugiens Bas (and Hauts, an inferior and steeper site) to grand cru, and are awaiting a final decision.
