Why is geriatrics a thing?
A
challenges of treating older aged people are:
- frailty
- complex co-morbidity
- slower responses to Tx
- increased social support requirement

define frailty.
A
state of increased vulnerability resulting from ageing associated decline in reserve and function across multiple physiologic systems such the ability to cope with everyday or acute stressors is compromised.
FRAILITY AIN’T:
- inevitable
- due to multiple long term conditions
- irreversible

4 Is
- Insatbility (falls)
- Immobility (off legs)
- Intellectual impairment (confusion)
- Incontinence (smaller ones are social admissions, SOB, chest pain and urinary Sx)

What 5 Ms do you need to keep in mind when treating a geriatric patient?
A
- Mind - dementia, delirium, depression
- Mobility - impaired gait, balance and falls
- Medications - polypharmacy, deprescribing, adverse effects, burden of medications
- Multi-complexity
- MATTERS MOST - individual meaningful health outcomes and preferences
