costal landscape development Flashcards
What is isostatic sea level change
-local change
-caused by the crust rising or falling in relative to sea-level
-caused by tectonic processes or the depression of the crust into the mantle by the weight of an ice sheet. When it melts the weight is released and the crust rebounds
Where in England is rising and where is falling
-Scotland and the North-west of England is rising by around 1.5mm per year
-this causes the south-east to subside by around 1mm per year
What is eustatic change sea level change?
-change which affects the whole planet
-caused by thermal contraction/expansion or changes in glacial processes
What are the emergent coastal landforms
-arches, stacks, stumps
-raised beaches
What are the submergent coastal landforms?
-rias
-fjords
-dalmatian coasts
What are Rias
when rising sea levels flood narrow winding inlets and river valleys
what are fjords
when rising sea levels flood deep glacial valleys to create natural inlets and harbours
