costal ecosystems - characteristics Flashcards
1
Q
what are large ecosystem known as?
A
biomes
2
Q
what is the difference between
1. biotic and 2. abiotic
A
- Biotic means living (plants and animals)
2. Abiotic means non-living parts (rocks, climate, minerals)
3
Q
NUTRIENT CYCLE:
all ecosystems transfer nutrients within them.
minerals are circulated between 3 stores,
what are these stores?
A
- nutrient source ( soil, mud and sand)
- biomass (the living part)
- litter (created by dying biomass, nutrients are released) (these nutrients go back into the nutrient source)
4
Q
examples of:
- land based nutrient cycle:
- coastal nutrient cycle:
A
- land based: mangroves, salt marshes and sand dunes.
- coastal based: coral reefs
(eg. coral reefs- SEA WATER (minerals) go to the BIOMASS (coral) this then goes to LITTER (dead parts of corals).
