coastal ecosystems - under threat Flashcards
1
Q
what is the difference between goods and services?
and give example of each:
A
- goods - material resource that can be extracted and used. (eg. fish, seaweed, salt, land for settlement and land use and construction materials).
- services - general benefits and advantages
(eg. protection from storms, harbours, shelter, wildlife habitats)
2
Q
what is the value of coral reefs?
A
- their biodiversity (house for many fish)
- the protection
- the rich fish stocks
3
Q
how are coral reefs stressed?
A
- tourism (people touching them damages them)
- pollution
- over fishing
- quarrying
4
Q
what is coral bleaching?
A
this happens when rising water temperature linked to global warming occur. (over time)
5
Q
what are the values of mangroves?
A
- home for fish and animals
- roots trap material and creates new land.
3 wood is used as material - protection from storms and rising sea levels.
6
Q
what are the threats to mangroves?
A
- deforestation for timber and because it is believed that they are full of diseases.
- removed for building land for tourists (hotels)
- fresh water is diverted away from mangroves ( for tourist uses)
7
Q
what are the values of salt marshes?
A
- home for animals (crabs)
- coastal protection
- trap organic matter
8
Q
what are the threats to salt marshes?
A
- abused by people
- land is reclaimed for:
industry
farmland
port development - industrial pollution ( oil , waste products from ports…)
- agricultural pollution (fertilizers and pesticides)
9
Q
what is the value of coastal sand dunes?
A
- coastal protection
10
Q
what are the threats to coastal sand dunes?
A
- extremely fragile
- people destroy them (horse riding, biking)
if this happens plants (eg. marram grass is also destroyed and cant bind the sand well. leading the wind to blow the sand away).
