Cosmology (Lesson 1) Flashcards
What was all the matter packed into?
Small point
What would happen to the small point
It would explode which would send matter through the universe at incredible speeds
What was the debris from the small point explosion composed of?
Hydrogen
How would helium form?
Nuclear Fusion
What is the definition of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis?
Productions of heavier, larger atoms by fusing them together
What would happen after the small point explosion?
Matter would cool and condense in specific locations
Who/What made us understand why specific locations?
Newton’s explanation of gravity
What would the concept of gravity help us understand?
Stars are not randomly scattered throughout the universe
What do we call these groups of stars and what are they held by?
These stars are called galaxies, held by gravity
How many planets and moons are in our solar system?
8 planets & 160 moons
What can you determine about the orderly manner of our solar system?
All of our planets formed around the same time
What are the two models of our universe?
- Geocentric-Earth is center
- Heliocentric-Sun is center
How did our solar system form?
From an enormous cloud of microscopic dust and matter from dead stars called a Solar Nebula
What would the Solar Nebula eventually do?
It would rotate
What caused matter to accumulate in the middle of the Nebula cloud?
Inward Gravitational Pull
What would happen when the inward and outward gravitational pull of the Nebula Cloud became balanced
A protoplanetary disk would form
What would matter do in the center of the cloud?
Accumulate until it was hot enough to glow and emit energy
What happened after the formation of the sun?
Temps decreased causing solids to form
What happened as solids began to form after temperatures decreased?
They were attracted to each other so they grew in size.
