Cosmology and Galaxies Flashcards
Contains every particle of matter, and energy in the universe
Super Particle/God Particle
Holds particles in the atoms together
Strong Nuclear Force
A theory that states that the three of the fundamental forces(WNF, EMF, SNF) were once unified despite the force of gravity falling away.
Grand Unified Theory
The force that was left behind after the SNF or Strong Nuclear Force
Electroweak Force
Stars that are made of mostly light elements like H, He, and trace amounts of other elements. Theoretical existence due no solid observations.
Population III Stars
Oldest stars that have been discovered as of today. Relatively heavier elements can be found in these stars. Usually found in Globular clusters.
Population II Stars
Youngest of all stars, contains more elements.
Population I Stars
The concept of new stars forming from the “ashes” or leftover material of older stars
Steady State Theory
Blackbody radiation that was emitted shortly after the Big Bang which can be detected from all directions.
Cosmic Microwave Background
A massive gravitationally bound system of stars, stellar remnants, gas, dust, and dark matter.
Galaxies
Disk-shaped with spiral arms
Spiral Galaxy
Lacks spiral arms, contains little gas, tends to have less stars, which are one of the oldest stars in the universe. Also has a tendency to have active galactic nuclei due to the rapid intake of matter by the blackholes in the center of these galaxies.
Elliptical Galaxies
No defined shape, oftenly formed by gravitational interactions
Irregular Galaxies
