Correlations Flashcards
Correlations
A mathematical technique in which a researcher investigates an association between two variables [co-variables]
Correlations are plotted on a scattergraph
Positive correlation
As one co-variable increases so does the other [e.g. The number of people in a room and noise tend to be positively correlated
Negative correlation
As one Co - variable increases the other Decreases [e.g. the number of people in a room and a Amount of personal space tend negatively corrected]
Evaluation [A03] correlation [strengths]
- Useful preliminary tool for research
- provides a precise and quantifiable measure of how 2 variables are related
Evaluation [A03] correlation] limitation
- Lack of experimental manipulation and control within a correlation
- cannot demonstrate cause and effect between variable
Zero correlations
When there is no relationship between the co-variables e.g. The association between the number people in a room. And the total daily rainfall is likely to be zero
