Correlations Flashcards
Correlation
When a set of variables are related, without finding a cause and effect.
Covariables
Two variables that produce quantitative data that can be compared.
Positive Correlation
When one variable increases, so does the other.
Negative Correlation
When one variable increases, the other will decrease.
Zero Correlation
When a correlational study finds no relationship between variables.
Correlation Coefficient
How we measure the strength and nature of the relationship between two co-variables.
What is the range of the correlation coefficient?
Between -1.0 and +1.0.
Perfect Correlation
When the correlation is either -1.0 (negative correlation), or +1.0 (positive correlation).
Scattergram
A graph that shows the correlation between two sets of data by plotting points to represent each pair of scores. Indicates the degree and direction of the correlation.
Null Hypothesis
There will be no relationship between the variables.
Directional Hypothesis
There will be a specified relationship between the variables (positive or negative).
Non-Directional Hypothesis
There will be a relationship between the variables, but the nature of it is not specified.
