Correlations Flashcards
What is a correlation?
A correlation is a relationship between two co-variables.
Name the three types of co-variables.
1)Positive correlation
2)Negative correlation
3)No correlation
What is a Positive correlation?
Where as one variable increases so does the other.
What is a negative correlation?
When one variable increases the other variable decreases.
What is No correlation?
When there is no relationship between the two variables
What is a Correlation coefficient?
Telling us the strength of the correlation
How do you work out a Correlation coefficient?
Using spearman’s rho statistical test
What is the scale for correlation coefficient and what does it mean?
•-1 to +1
•-1= negative
•0= no correlation
•+1= Postive correlation
What is Operationalising variables?
Describing exactly how you are going to collect the quantitative data.
What are the three types of correlations hypothesis?
1)One tailed
2)Two tailed
3)Null hypothesis
What is a one tailed hypothesis?
It says if it is positive or negative and gives a direction
What is a two tailed hypothesis?
Shows there is a relationship but doesn’t give a direction
What is a null hypothesis?
No relationship ,and any relationship is due to chance.
What three words to never say when talking about a correlation?
Difference, Link and Effect
Name two strengths of conducting correlations?
1)Used to suggest ideas for future experiments
2)Identify relationships where in some cases conducting experiments is unethical or impossible to manipulate
