correlational data Flashcards
strengths of correlational data
•provide a precise and quantifiable measure of how two variables are related
•they are often used as a starting point before conducting an experimental study
•useful preliminary tool for research
•they are relatively quick and economical to carry out, there is no need for a controlled environment or manipulation of variables
•secondary data can be used making it less time consuming
limitations of correlational data
•it can only say how variables are related but not why, correlation doesn’t equal causation
•cannot demonstrate cause and effect
•there might be another untested variable that is causing the relationship between the two covariables being studied. this is known as the third variable problem
