Correlation and regression Flashcards
correlation and regression, linking regression to linear/log relationships, calculating the PMCC, Hypothesis testing for zero correlation
independent variable/ explanatory variable
dependent / response variable
what is the PMCC
how to calculate the PMCC
PMCC definition
a measure for how strongly linearly correlated bi variate data is
how to solve hypothesis testing for zero correlation using the PMCC
steps:
1) state you H0 and H1 using rho, if it is negative <, positive >.
2) find the critical value in the formula book, using significance level and the number being tested for, in this example 8 and at 5%
3) draw a small line diagram to show clearly if our value given is more correlated than the critical value (can be used for positive or negative)
4) conclude
part b,
common sense answer dont overthink it
how to describe non-linear relationships
one of the graphs appears to be an exponential, or polynomial relationship. This
could be a relationship such as y=ax^n or y=kb^x. Unfortunately, we can no longer use the PMCC to help
describe this relationship because it is not linear.
how to solve a hypothesis test for correlation (two-tailed)
steps:
1) state h0 and h1, h1 will be rho not equal to 0
2) halve the sig level and test for critical value with the number being tested for
3) compare using a small line diagram
4) conclude
