Correlation And Qualitative Research Flashcards
What stats test is used for correlation
Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient/ Pearson r
What is considered small and large for a coefficient
+0.1 is small, +0.3 is medium and 0.5 is large . Of less than 0.05 then not sig relationship
Third variable effect on correlation
Correlation doesn’t imply causation, one reason is because a third variables could effect e.g. poor academics and drinking are both correlated to poor impulse control
Pearsons non parametric alternative
Kendalls tau
Qualitative research principles
Inductive approach for events that cant be measured with numbers, more about depth than breadth. Highly detailed and understand experience, attitudes.. want EV and participant empowerment
Diffs between qual and quant
Qual: inductive, depth, natural, purposeful sampling, interviews and observation, iterative interpretation. Quant: deductive, breadth, experimental, random sampling, surveys, stats analysis
What can be gained from qual research
Recurrent themes, make new hyps, survey components, classification systems, conceptual models
Conversation analysis and discourse analysis
Transcribing conversations and all types of spoken interaction and text. Use construction, function, variation, accountability, discursive devices,
