Coronary Heart Disease: a non-communicable disease Flashcards
What is coronary heart disease?
When the coronary arteries become blocked with the build up of fatty material. This results in less blood flow to the heart, reducing its oxugen supply, which may lead to a heart attack.
What does non-communicable mean?
Non-infectious
What are 2 solutions to coronary heart disease?
1) Metal mesh tubes inserted in arteries - keeps the arteries open to allow blood to flow through.
Negatives: blood can clot near tubes
Positives: lower risk of heart attack
2) Drugs that reduce levels of LDL (bad cholesterol) - which causes the disease
Negatives: needs to be taken continuosly
Positives: lower risk of stroke, coronary heart disease and heart attack
