what can happen to the coronary arteries?
there can be fatty build up made up of certain lipids. after a while they can block the arteries
what happens if an artery is blocked by fatty material?
the amount of oxygen reaching the heart is reduced
what are the symptoms of a blocked up coronary artery?
a person could develop chest pain called angina and might have a heart attack if untreated.
what damage is left after a heart attack?
it can cause death or damage to the heart muscle, part of the heart or the whole heart can be destroyed.
what are statins?
Statins are drugs that help to lower cholesterol in the blood. They do this by lowering its production in the liver.
what are some side affects of statins?
memory loss and bad headaches
what is a stent?
stents are inserted in blocked arteries to increase blood flow
what are the pros and cons of a mechanical valve?
pros
-they are very durable
-they don’t need to be replaced

-risk of blood clotting
-need to take blood thinning pills for the rest of their lives
-can hear the clicking of the valve opening and shutting
what are the pros and cons of a tissue valve?
pros -its made of biological tissue -don't have a risk of blood clotting cons -need to be replaced as they don't last forever
after a heart transplant what drug does the patient and why?
immunosuppressant drugs, these make sure the immune system doesn’t reject the heart. the drug increases risk of infection
