Coronary Artery Disease: IScahemic cardiomyopathy and hibernating myocardium Flashcards
What leads to Ischaemic Cardiomyopathy?
Chronic Coronary disease with or without symptoms.
What is Ischaemic Cardiomopathy?
Enlargment of the left ventricle causing extensive damage to the left ventricle either by a heart attack or unstable angina attack.
The damage is irriversible and pumping of the heart is inefficient.
The ejection fraction can decrease to as low as 30%.
The low ejection fractio will lead to:
Hypoperfusion which is inadequate perfusion of the body tissues leading to inadequate supply of oxygen and niturents in the tissue.
What can chronic hyperperfusion lead to?
Hibernating Myocardium: This is when there is reduced output from viable myocardium. Some segments of the myocardium exhibit abnormalities of contractile function. It is never sufficient to cause irreversible damage, and revascularisation with surgery will resolve.
