Cornea Flashcards
Arcus Senilis
A gray/white arc around the out part of the cornea
Scar
Scars on the cornea (go figure)
Superficial Punctate Keratitis (SPK/PEE)
Type of corneal inflammation
Dellen
Structural thinning of the cornea
Pterygium
A fleshy tissue growth that extends over the cornea
Haze
Cloudy/opaque appearance of the cornea
Epithelium Layer
1st layer Surface layer; establishes a barrier and smooth surface for the tear film
Bowman’s Layer
2nd Layer Tough layer; keeps the cornea from swelling forward
Stroma
3rd layer Largest layer made of collagen fibers
Descemet’s Layer
4th layerImportant for the health of endothelial (inner blood vessel) cells
Endothelium
5th Layer Works as a barrier and a pump to keep the cornea from getting to wet
Edema
Swelling/build up of fluid in the cornea
Folds
Folds in the descent’s membrane associated with edema
Infiltrates
Small clumps of cells that have moved into the cornea
Limbal Relaxing Incision (LRI)/T-cut
Partial incisions made in the outer edge of the cornea
RK (Radial Keratotomy) Incision
Small, deep incisions made to flatten the cornea
Limbus
The border between the cornea and the sclera
Posterior Crocodile Shagreen
Polygonal, opaque structures in the cornea that resembles crocodile skin
Guttata
Droplet-like accumulations of non-banded collagen towards the back (Descemet’s layer) of the cornea
Fuchs’ Dystrophy
Condition where cells in the endothelium become unhealthy and can die off
Krukenber’s Spindle
Vertical pigment formation in the back of the cornea
Pannus
Growth of blood vessels from the limbus onto the clear corneal surface
Band Keratopathy
Corneal degeneration composed of dust-like calcium deposits
Ulcer
An open sore mostly caused by an infection
