Structure theorist
Society shapes our identities through thoughts, beliefs and ideologies
Infrastructure pyramid
Means and relations of productions, consists of the ownership of raw resources. And private ownership and is the economic base of the pyramid
Superstructure
Everything not related to do with production, often the passing down of ideologies and philosophy to the infrastructure, it maintains and shapes the infrastructure
The proletariat
These are the non ruling class, they’re working class and lower class, they are the labourers and the workforce and those who are exploited
Bourgeoisie
These are the ruling class, they are the upper class, aristocrats, monarchy. They take and exploit the proletariat for their cheap labour and value
What is democracy?
Democracy is a state in which the people elect representatives. It comes from the Greek word ‘demos’ meaning people, and ‘krayos’ meaning power (power of the people)
What is the patriarchy?
A social system which men hold the most influence, power, and authority over women and see the oppression of women
What is capitalism?
It’s an economic and political system and belief which a country or states market is free and trade and industry is privately owned to make a profit using exploitative methods of cheap labour
What is a nanny state?
It’s a state in which the government controls society through excessive rules and laws dictating their private and public lives
What are social institutions?
A group of institutions which work together harmoniously to provide for the needs of society, these consist of the family, education, healthcare.
What is conflict theory
There is a fundamental conflict in society between two groups, where one is in power and the other is opresseed, deriving from a struggle for limited resources.
What is consensus theory?
Societies run best on a social system with rules, which its citizens each follow. Social change should be done through and within social institutions and not through radical change.
Radical feminists beliefs.
“all men are bad” -Greer. men hold dominance in all aspects of society and contribute to the patriarchy, with this taking key significance in any male/female relationship. The patriarchy is the main form of inequality in society and radical change is needed to combat this. Such as gender segregation.
Marxist feminists beliefs
‘some men are bad’ and the main form of inequality is through class systems (lower, working, middle, upper). Women are doubly exploited as workers and as women in society and in the home, focusing on the connection between Capitalism and the subordination of women.
