core studies - behaviourism Flashcards
assumptions of this area
all behaviour is learned from the environment, and the situation is more important than the individual.
basic principle of classical conditioning
we learn through association, stimulus and response
basic principle of operant conditioning
we learn through reinforcement, rewards and punishment
basic principles of the social learning theory
states that children develop through learning from other people around them
examples of role models for children
parents, teachers, siblings, celebrities
strengths of the social learning theory
useful application to change behaviours of children, measurable an observable behaviour - less demand characteristics
weaknesses of the social learning theory
reductionist - ignores other explanations of behaviour. sometimes only changes behaviour for a short period of time
who is Ivan Pavlov
a famous Russian psychologists who developed the theory of classical conditioning
what did Ivan Pavlov do
he demonstrated salvation in dogs, through series of experiments where he put sounds of a bell with the presentation of food. the dogs then associated the bell with food and would salivate to the sound of the bell, even if there was no food.
