Core Levels of Linguistics Flashcards
Name the core levels of linguistics from broadest to narrowest.
Pragmatics, Semantics, Syntax, Morphology, Phonology, Phonetics
Phonetics
Phoneticians study the smallest pieces of sound and the speech apparatus that produce them.
spectrograms
Computer generated analyses of speech sounds made by gathering many human samples.
Phonology
The study of the systems and patterns of speech sounds, namely, how specific languages tend to organize sound, and their rules regarding sound.
morphology
The analysis of the structure of words. (on the basis of pieces of meaning rather than sound) Namely, the patterns of word formation/derivation in a particular language.
morphemes
any of the minimal grammatical units of a language, each constituting a word or meaningful part of a word, that cannot be divided into smaller independent grammatical parts
syntax
(BASICALLY, GRAMMAR) the study of the patterns of formation of sentences and phrases from words / the study of the formation of the grammatical sentences a language / these rules / a presentation or instance of these rules. The most widely studied area of linguistics.
the smallest unit of meaning within a language.
A morpheme
sentences and phrases are to syntax as words are to ____________.
morphology
lexical
of or relating to word organization. (Lexis means speech)
lexis
the vocabulary of a language, as distinct from its grammar; the total stock of words and idiomatic combinations of them in a language; lexicon.
semantics
The study of meaning and changes in meaning and form in words, phrases, and sentences.
pragmatics
the invisible meaning. (Think APPROPRIATENESS) study takes into account context and culture of the speaker
